A 37-year-old man has been remanded in custody for 15 days following allegations of stealing a chocolate bar from Redwave Plaza in Malé.
He was arrested and brought before the Criminal Court on Monday in connection with the theft. According to the court order, the item in question was a 50-gram Snickers chocolate bar valued at MVR 14.
The individual reportedly requested leniency from the court, stating that the item was of low value and asking not to be kept in custody for an extended period.
Police informed the court that the man was observed on shop surveillance footage taking the chocolate, consuming it inside the premises, and placing the wrapper in his pocket.
The court noted that this is the first occasion on which the individual has been presented before the court for a remand decision. However, the order also indicated that he has a prior criminal record.
Police records show that he has been arrested three times this year on suspicion of misdemeanours, including theft.
Judge Hussain Faiz Rasheed ordered the man to be held in custody for 15 days, citing public safety concerns should he be released.
