The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has requested the Prosecutor General’s Office to prosecute four individuals, including former State Minister of Housing Akram Kamaluddin, in connection with alleged irregularities in the allocation of flats under the Gedhoruveriya housing scheme.

In a statement published on its website, the ACC said that the four individuals had included unauthorised recipients in the list of 4,000 flats and obtained unlawful benefits. The individuals named are:

  • Akram Kamaluddin, then State Minister of the Housing Ministry

  • Mohamed Arif, then Senior Executive of the Ministry

  • Lirgam Waheed, then Senior Executive of the Ministry

  • Ahmed Vishan Naseem, then Director General of the Ministry

The ACC has recommended that charges be filed under Article 513(b) of the Penal Code, which pertains to the abuse of official authority for undue advantage.

The commission stated that its investigation had uncovered evidence indicating the involvement of the four individuals in the alleged misconduct. It also noted that the four are being investigated in connection with additional offences.

The current administration launched a review of the Gedhoruveriya flat list after taking office. A revised provisional list was issued in March and opened for public complaints. Last week, the government announced that no further lists would be issued.

As a result, allocations under the scheme will proceed based on the flat list compiled during the previous administration under President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The list was prepared by the individuals now recommended for prosecution.
