The Parliamentary Group Leader of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) and Inguraidhoo MP, Ibrahim Falaah, has stated that the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will lose the upcoming local council elections.

Speaking during Wednesday’s parliament sitting, Falaah criticised the MDP in response to former President Mohamed Nasheed’s decision to rejoin the party.

Referring to Nasheed’s previous decision to leave and form a new political party, Falaah said: “The former president of the ruling party, President Nasheed, first said he would dissolve it. It is true that he dissolved it in 2023.”

He further stated, “We have sent five worms to the MDP,” without providing additional clarification.

Falaah also said MDP would “lose the next local council election altogether.”

The Elections Commission has scheduled the next local council elections for April. The five-year term of the current councils will end in May.

Meanwhile, the government is working on amending current legislation to increase the number of councillors in islands with populations exceeding 3,000. The proposed amendment is expected to be submitted to Parliament soon.
