Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairman Fayyaz Ismail has announced plans to hold a rally outside Muleeaage, the official residence of President Mohamed Muizzu, after alleging that the government is obstructing efforts to secure a venue for the party’s upcoming events.
The events include a rally to welcome back former President Mohamed Nasheed and members of the Democrats party, who recently decided to rejoin the MDP. The Democrats' decision was announced on Tuesday, with the party citing the need to form a stronger opposition to hold the current administration accountable.
In a post on X Thursday evening, Fayyaz said, “The government of Dr Mohamed Muizzu is obstructing the efforts to arrange a venue for these ceremonies. Therefore, we now intend to welcome President Mohamed Nasheed by 23 June 2025 [next Monday] if another venue is not arranged.”
He added that all MDP supporters are invited to gather outside Muleeaage on 23 June at 9 p.m. if no alternative venue is provided.
Muleeaage, the official presidential residence, is located within a designated green zone where public rallies are prohibited.
The MDP is also preparing to mark its 20th anniversary next Thursday. While Fayyaz did not confirm an exact date, his post suggests that Nasheed will formally rejoin the MDP during the anniversary celebrations.
