Presidential Spokesperson Heena Waleed has denied allegations made by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairman Fayyaz Ismail that the government is obstructing the party from securing a venue for its anniversary celebrations, which include the rejoining of former President Mohamed Nasheed.
In a post on X Thursday night, Heena stated that the current administration had expanded the right to assembly by designating additional locations for gatherings without prior permission. She said the new locations include Male's industrial zone, Usfasgandu, and Rasfannu.
Heena did not mention Fayyaz by name, but criticised statements that she said could mislead the public.
“Previously, gatherings were only permitted in the carnival area without prior permission. However, this government has designated more locations for political activity,” she said.
She added that maintaining the rule of law and democratic order requires clarity and responsibility from political figures.
Fayyaz, in a separate post on X, had stated that the MDP would proceed with its planned rally on 23 June in front of President Mohamed Muizzu’s official residence, Muleeaage, if a venue is not granted. The location falls within a designated green zone where public gatherings are prohibited by law.
Heena reiterated the importance of conducting political activities within legal boundaries and said responsible engagement is necessary for democratic development in the Maldives.
