The Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works has been dissolved as part of changes to the cabinet structure.

The move follows developments after the recent council elections and referendum. Ten ministers resigned on Tuesday to allow changes in the administration.

Adam Shareef Umar, who served as Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, was among those who resigned.

The responsibilities of the dissolved ministry have been reassigned to other ministries. Matters related to local governance and decentralisation have been transferred to the Ministry of Finance, while public works functions have been assigned to the Ministry of Housing.

Under the revised structure, Minister of Finance Moosa Zameer will serve as the government’s representative at the Local Government Authority (LGA).

Despite the dissolution, staff of the ministry have been instructed to continue reporting to work until further notice.

Following the changes, the number of ministries has been reduced from 20 to 15.

All cabinet ministers, except for the Minister of Defence, have taken their oaths of office. The appointment to the defence portfolio has not been announced.
