The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has scheduled a rally for Monday at Sultan Park to welcome former President Mohamed Nasheed and members of The Democrats, who have decided to rejoin the party.
The Democrats announced their decision on Tuesday, citing the need to strengthen the opposition and hold the current government accountable. Following this decision, the MDP’s national assembly agreed to organise a public event to receive the returning members.
Initially, the MDP claimed that the government had not provided a venue for the rally and stated that the event would be held in front of the official residence of the President. However, Construction Minister Abdulla Muththalib confirmed Friday that Sultan Park had been allocated for the event.
The rally will take place ahead of the MDP’s 20th anniversary, which falls on Thursday. The party has issued invitations encouraging public participation in the event.
