The Criminal Court has ordered Hassan Mamdooh to be remanded in custody pending the outcome of his trial on charges related to embezzling funds from the unfinished K-Park residential project in Hulhumalé. The decision follows his repeated failure to appear in court without valid justification.

Mamdooh is on trial alongside Jaishan Saeed, who is also facing multiple charges in connection with the case. Court proceedings have been repeatedly delayed due to Mamdooh's absence, for which he submitted medical documents.

At a hearing held on Monday, Judge Ali Nadeem stated that the medical certificates did not indicate any illness that would prevent Mamdooh from attending court. The judge also noted that several individuals, including potential witnesses, had reported seeing Mamdooh outside his home on days he had claimed to be unwell.

Mamdooh was arrested and brought to court for not cooperating with the trial process. The judge ordered that he remain in custody until the trial concludes, citing attempts by both Mamdooh and Jaishan to obstruct proceedings. He also observed that Jaishan’s lawyer had repeatedly reported being unwell and was again absent during the hearing, while Mamdooh’s lawyer is no longer attending.

Some flat buyers affected by the fraudulent sale of K-Park apartments testified during the hearing. The case involves more than 50 buyers and 23 apartments. Each apartment is being addressed in separate charges.

Mamdooh is facing 104 charges, including:

  • 50 counts of tax-related offences

  • 50 counts of fraudulent activity

  • 3 counts of knowingly issuing invalid documents to mislead

  • 1 charge of money laundering

Jaishan Saeed faces 74 charges, including:

  • 47 counts of fraudulent activity

  • 27 counts of aiding in tax-related offences

  • 20 counts of tax-related offences

  • 3 counts of knowingly issuing invalid documents to mislead

Authorities have also seized Mamdooh’s assets pending trial. These include a penthouse, valued at MVR 8 million, where he resided with his wife. The investigation additionally uncovered 200 perfume bottles, handbags valued between MVR 40,000 to MVR 50,000, and jewellery estimated between USD 10,000 to USD 25,000.
