President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that next year’s national budget will allocate MVR 1 billion towards the construction of housing units in the islands, as part of the government’s broader efforts to address housing needs across the country.
Speaking at a rally in Manadhoo, Noonu Atoll, the President stated that housing remains the most pressing issue in Manadhoo and other parts of the country. He emphasised the government’s commitment to long-term solutions through dedicated development projects.
The President said that no single island could implement sufficient housing projects within a single year. In response, 58 new island housing units are scheduled to begin this year, including those in Manadhoo. These are in addition to 40 units already in progress.
“For the coming year, we are putting another MVR 1 billion into the budget for more projects,” he said, noting that his policy is to ensure that sufficient housing units are established in stages over the years.
Loan scheme and budget breakdown
The President also outlined the government’s housing loan scheme, which offers loans at a 5% interest rate nationwide. Residents of Manadhoo will be eligible to apply, and the scheme will remain open annually.
Proposals for the 58 new housing units have already been received and are under evaluation by the Housing Ministry. Once the evaluation is complete, construction will begin.
The government has allocated MVR 1.5 billion for housing in the current year. Combined with next year’s allocation and other funding, the total housing budget now stands at MVR 3 billion.
