JSC to interview Chief Justice candidates on Saturday
Administrative responsibilities of the Supreme Court have temporarily been assigned to Justice Abdulla Hameed.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has scheduled interviews with three candidates for the position of Chief Justice. The interviews are set to take place on Saturday.
The position became vacant following the retirement of Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan last week.
Applications for the post were open until Tuesday. The three shortlisted candidates are:

Abdul Ghani Mohamed, former Supreme Court Justice

Shujau Usman, former Chief Justice of the High Court

Abdulla Mohamed, Family Court Judge and former Chief Judge of the Criminal Court
Ghani was removed from the judiciary by the JSC in December 2019, a decision later approved by Parliament during the previous administration. Shujau Usman resigned as judge in August following the then-JSC’s decision to dismiss him, which was forwarded to Parliament.
With the retirement of Muthasim, administrative responsibilities of the Supreme Court have temporarily been assigned to Justice Abdulla Hameed.

In accordance with the Judiciary Act, the process for appointing a Chief Justice or any Supreme Court judge includes:

The JSC conducts interviews and sends recommended names to the President.

The President forwards the selected name or names to Parliament.

Upon parliamentary approval, the President must make the appointment within seven days.

The President may also nominate individuals of his choice to the Supreme Court.
