Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairman Fayyaz Ismail has accused the current government of dismantling the structure of the Constitution and reducing it to a “plaything”.
In a message posted on social media platform X on Thursday, Fayyaz made the remarks to mark the 17th anniversary of the current Constitution, which was ratified and came into force on 7 August 2008.
“The Constitution is 17 years old and the basic structure of the Constitution has been broken... the Constitution has been made a plaything,” Fayyaz said.
In his post, Fayyaz outlined a number of concerns which, he claimed, demonstrate the erosion of constitutional principles under the current administration. These include:
-
The weakening of decentralisation, a constitutional requirement under Chapter 8, through the deprivation of local councils;
-
The removal of powers vested in the judiciary;
-
Violations of constitutional provisions governing the management of state finances.
Fayyaz urged the public to use the upcoming local council elections as an opportunity to restore constitutional norms.
“We must take advantage of the last opportunity to uphold the hard-earned constitutional rules. That is the upcoming local council elections,” he stated.
