Yameen criticises govt for focus on ATM openings
Yameen said the government should instead focus on delivering substantive development projects.
Former President Abdulla Yameen has criticised the government for focusing on the inauguration of ATMs in islands rather than prioritising major development projects promised for this year.
Speaking at a PNF rally on Thursday, Yameen referred to President Mohamed Muizzu’s New Year address, in which the President outlined plans for 2025, and linked it to the ATM openings during the President’s recent visit to Baa Atoll.
Yameen said such activities should not take up presidential time. “ATMs have been installed by previous governments, and the Bank of Maldives can do it. It is not something that requires the President’s involvement,” he said.
He also claimed that the President’s Office contacts islands before visits to identify ribbon-cutting opportunities. “As it went on, this year ended up being the year of the ATM,” he added.
Addressing PNF councillor Naif Shaukath, a former deputy housing minister in his administration, Yameen asked, “Do you believe this year is probably the year of the biggest project to open the ATM?”
Yameen said the government should instead focus on delivering substantive development projects.
The current administration will mark two years in office this November. Some PNC MPs have recently expressed concern within the parliamentary group that several of President Muizzu’s pledges have yet to be implemented.
