The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has closed part of the lagoon in front of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) to proceed with the widening and modernisation of Boduthakurufaanu Magu in Malé. The company announced on Monday that ferries from atolls will now be directed to use the Henveiru Ferry Terminal lagoon instead.

The lagoon area between the tourist market and Bridge No. 1 was closed on Tuesday as construction work began. The Ministry of Construction has not stated how long the closure will remain in place.

The closed area had been commonly used by provincial ferries and resort ferries.

An MTCC official told Daur that the Henveiru Ferry Terminal lagoon area would now be utilised for vessel operations. The terminal, along with the Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal, was opened on 13 March 2025 to ease travel difficulties faced by passengers using launch ferries.

MTCC had previously invited expressions of interest for use of the new facilities, with seven companies responding.

The official added that although the Henveiru terminal was not previously used extensively, the closure of the lagoon adjacent to the tourist market has increased the number of vessels using both the ferry terminal and the lagoon area in front of the Bank of Maldives (BML).
