The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) on Tuesday ordered a ban on the import, sale, and use of Dr Pepper soft drink in the country due to excessive levels of benzoic acid.
Dr Pepper, manufactured in the United States, was flagged by the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF). The MFDA said it had received information that consignments of the product had been imported into the Maldives.
According to the authority, testing revealed that Dr Pepper contained benzoic acid above the permissible limit.
“Therefore, as a precautionary measure, this product is not to be imported, sold, or consumed in the Maldives,” the MFDA said in a statement.
For further information, the MFDA has asked the public to contact its offices at 3034231 or 7603204.
