An employee of the Children’s Ombudsman’s Office has been dismissed following the disclosure of alleged irregularities, according to the Whistleblower Protection Unit of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
The unit’s report stated that the dismissal followed a period in which the employee faced workplace mistreatment. The report added that other staff members were summoned to secret meetings during the investigation and that the whistleblower was accused of being identified as a specific person, leading to discrimination and exclusion at work.
Some employees reported that the individual was shouted at in the workplace. However, the unit confirmed that the employee directly responsible for exposing the issues had not been dismissed.
The report noted that the dismissed employee had previously performed well but was later removed on grounds of alleged misconduct, including claims of disobedience, disruption of the office environment, spreading unverified information, and the potential to cause serious damage to the workplace.
The employee has been informed of the option to seek compensation through the courts.
Separately, another employee who raised allegations of corruption at Maldives Post Limited was also dismissed. The Whistleblower Protection Unit imposed a fine of MVR 900,000 on the organisation for failing to comply with its directives.
