Rameela nominated as rights body president
The position of HRCM president became vacant following the expiry of the five-year term of the former president, Mariyam Muna, in November.
President Mohamed Muizzu has submitted a nomination to the People’s Majlis for the appointment of Dr Aishath Rameela as president of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
The position of HRCM president became vacant following the expiry of the five-year term of the former president, Mariyam Muna, in November.
The nomination letter sent by the President was presented to parliament on Monday. The Speaker announced that the matter had been referred to the Human Rights Committee for review.
Dr Rameela was appointed as a member of the HRCM last month. She previously served as the first Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare under the current administration and resigned from the cabinet in December 2024 due to health reasons.
Under amendments passed in 2024, the presidents of independent institutions, including the HRCM, are appointed through parliamentary approval rather than internal selection by commission members. The President nominates a candidate from among commission members, subject to the consent of parliament.
