The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Maldivians to avoid non-essential travel to Nepal due to ongoing protests in the country.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the ministry said demonstrations had escalated following restrictions on social media applications and allegations of government corruption. Reports indicate that protesters have set fire to parts of the legislature and attacked senior officials.
The advisory urged Maldivians to:
-
Refrain from travelling to Nepal unless the visit is essential until the situation stabilises.
-
Exercise caution and prioritise safety if living in or travelling to Kathmandu.
-
Avoid conflict areas and public gatherings.
-
Follow instructions from the authorities in Nepal, the Maldives High Commission in India, and the Foreign Ministry.
A significant number of Maldivians, including medical students, are currently in Nepal. The ministry said it is coordinating with the relevant authorities to ensure their safety and that the situation is being closely monitored.
“The High Commission of the Maldives in India and this ministry are working to provide the necessary assistance during this period. We will continue to support Maldivians in Nepal if the situation deteriorates further,” the statement said.
For assistance, Maldivians in Nepal may contact the Maldives High Commission in India at +919910040786 or the Foreign Ministry hotline at 7983400.
