Customs seize 1.8 million smuggled cigarettes in Addu
A total of 1,840,000 cigarette sticks were confiscated, with an estimated import duty of MVR 15 million.

Customs have seized more than 1.8 million cigarettes smuggled into the Maldives.
In a statement on Wednesday, Customs said the seizure was made during a search of a shipment brought by sea to Hithadhoo port in Addu.
A total of 1,840,000 cigarette sticks were confiscated, with an estimated import duty of MVR 15 million.
Customs confirmed that an investigation into the case is underway.
Authorities have previously seized several shipments of smuggled cigarettes. Since the government increased cigarette prices late last year, sales of counterfeit and illegally imported brands have become more common.
