The Maldives Customs Service has launched an investigation into the disappearance of more than 13 million cigarettes from two containers seized earlier this year at the Hulhumale port operated by the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL).

According to Customs, the two 40-foot containers, seized in late April, contained 1,360 cases of cigarettes, amounting to approximately 13.6 million cigarette sticks. The estimated import duty on the consignment was MVR 122 million based on standard pricing.

In a statement issued on Thursday, MPL confirmed that Customs is investigating the disappearance of the two containers from its Hulhumale terminal.

MPL said it is also conducting an internal inquiry through its relevant departments but did not disclose further details, citing the ongoing police investigation.

“Once the investigation is completed, MPL will take all necessary action in accordance with the investigation report,” the company said.

Customs has not yet issued a public comment on the incident.

The case comes amid a rise in the illegal sale of smuggled and counterfeit cigarettes, which has become increasingly common following the government’s recent increase in cigarette prices.
