Senior Family Court Judge Ibrahim Mahir has been appointed as a judge of the High Court.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) took the decision unanimously at its meeting on Thursday. The appointment and swearing-in ceremony were held on the same day.
A total of 14 candidates contested for the High Court post. Two vacancies had been open on the High Court bench.
Earlier, the JSC had decided to appoint Mohamed Shaheed, a former Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Home Affairs who also worked with the legal team of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC). The decision drew criticism, and a senior lawyer from the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) filed a case in the Civil Court.
The Civil Court accepted the case, and Shaheed subsequently withdrew his application for the post.
