The Maldives Qualifications Authority (MQA) on Tuesday reported a case of higher education programmes being conducted abroad without its authorisation.
In a statement, the MQA said it had received information about a higher education institution registered in the Maldives operating programmes overseas and awarding certificates to students. The authority did not disclose the name of the institution.
The MQA noted that official agencies in three countries had requested verification of the certificates awarded to foreign students. It stressed that no institution has been authorised to conduct programmes abroad or issue certificates in this manner.
The authority said the institution involved would be held responsible for any harm caused to foreign students. It added that such practices could affect international confidence in higher education institutions in the Maldives.
The MQA further stated that accreditation permits for overseas programmes will not be issued until new regulations governing accredited programmes abroad take effect this month. The authority noted that the matter had been highlighted to the public previously.
