The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) on Wednesday launched an operation to inspect marine vessels in order to strengthen compliance with maritime safety regulations.
According to the MNDF, the operation aims to prevent accidents caused by operating vessels without a licence or failing to follow established safety measures.
During the inspections, officers will check whether vessels carry valid safety certificates and whether captains hold the required marine licences. Functioning VHF communication equipment will also be verified.
The MNDF said the checks will be carried out through area commands across the country, including inspections of vessels entering and leaving ports.
The force added that the operation will ensure that vessels operate in compliance with maritime laws and regulations.
