The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has opened its first air station in Gan, Addu.
The facility was inaugurated during President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Addu. Speaking at the opening, the President said the new station will expand the MNDF Air Corps’ capacity to manage national air operations.
According to the MNDF, the station is located in a historically, strategically and geographically important area. The site includes a 400-metre taxiway, a 100-metre apron for MNDF TB2 drones, a hangar with modern facilities and an accommodation block for personnel.
The Maldives’ first military air corps was inaugurated on 15 March last year to provide round-the-clock surveillance of Maldivian waters. New drones were introduced with that launch.
The Gan Air Station was established and placed under service through a presidential decree on 3 November. The facility will be responsible for maintaining Maldivian airspace and the Special Economic Zone, conducting air operations in national territory and ensuring continuous defence of the country’s airspace.
