President Mohamed Muizzu announced on Wednesday that the government will begin constructing 3,000 housing units in Malé before the end of the year.

Speaking at a rally organised by the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) at its main camp near Artificial Beach, the President said the project will be separate from the 4,000 housing units pledged under India’s line of credit.

“We will start at least 3,000 housing units in the city this year. This is in addition to the 4,000 housing units of India’s LOC line of credit,” Muizzu told supporters.

While the President did not specify when the 4,000-unit project would commence, he said preparations are underway to begin the additional 3,000-unit development this year. He did not provide further details about the project.

Muizzu said housing remains a central commitment of his administration. He added that land and flats allocated by the previous government are being handed over without alteration, and that new housing projects will be implemented both in Malé and other parts of the country.

The President also reiterated his commitment to delivering on other electoral pledges across various sectors.

The announcement came as the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) prepared for a rally in Malé on Friday night, while the PNC gathered supporters at Wednesday’s event.
