The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the Adhaalath Party have agreed to cooperate in holding the government accountable and will participate jointly in the MDP’s planned rally in Malé on Friday.

The MDP announced earlier that the protest, to be held under the slogan “Looted, Looted”, will focus on what it describes as the government’s failures. These include claims that the economy has been damaged, access to medical treatment restricted, parliament and the judiciary brought under direct control of President Mohamed Muizzu, and state institutions taken over by the administration. The party said the protest aims to draw attention to the difficulties faced by the public.

In a joint statement issued on Thursday, the MDP and Adhaalath Party urged as many supporters as possible to attend the rally.

The statement said both parties had respected the outcome of the last election and allowed time for the government to deliver on its pledges. However, it said the current situation shows that “the country is in a complete mess,” adding that citizens have no effective avenue for complaints and no institution to safeguard their rights.

“The only way to protect the rights of the people in this situation is for political parties to work together to hold the government accountable,” the statement read.

The parties also invited members of the public, regardless of political affiliation, to take part in Friday’s demonstration.
