4 arrested in airport dollar heist remanded pending trial

Four men arrested in connection with the robbery of a briefcase containing US dollars at Velana International Airport (VIA) have been ordered to remain in custody pending trial.
The incident took place at around 4:45 a.m. on 27 October, when masked men stole a Bank of Maldives (BML) money briefcase from the walkway connecting the old and new terminals of the airport.
Police arrested four suspects from K. Huraa the following morning. A speedboat believed to have been used in the robbery was also seized from Huraa harbour.
The suspects have been identified as:

Mazin Moosa, 25, of Ration, L. Maavah

Ahmed Raihan Naeem, 20, of M. Chorus, Malé

Ibrahim Anoof, 24, of Alhivilaage, K. Guraidhoo

Hussain Shahid, 30, of Alhivilaage, K. Guraidhoo
They were initially remanded in custody for five days. Police confirmed that the four were produced before court on Sunday and have now been remanded pending trial.
According to police, the briefcase contained more than USD 100,000, which BML had taken to issue to departing passengers. The robbers reportedly threatened the courier with a knife before seizing the briefcase.
Police said that no security officers were present at the time of the cash transfer and that the stolen money has not yet been recovered.
The investigation is ongoing.
