Three additional suspects have been arrested in connection with the theft of a Bank of Maldives (BML) dollar briefcase from Velana International Airport (VIA), police confirmed on Monday. The stolen money has not yet been recovered.
According to police, the three individuals were arrested last week. They are:

Abdul Awwal Ibrahim Abubaker, 27, of Bina, GA. Villingili

Ahmed Mahid, 44, of Eheewaage, Th. Vilufushi

Ali Afzal, 21, of Vashagulimaage, S. Hithadhoo
Police stated that all three have been remanded in custody pending trial.
Four suspects had previously been detained in connection with the case. The latest arrests bring the total number of people held over the robbery to seven.
The robbery took place on 27 October, when masked individuals stole a briefcase containing foreign currency at the airport.
Sources told Atoll Times that the briefcase contained more than USD 100,000, equivalent to over MVR 1.5 million at an exchange rate of USD 15.42.
More than two weeks after the incident, the stolen money has not been recovered. Police have not released further details on the progress of the investigation.
