The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Air Corps has established its first air station, which began operations on Monday.

The Air Corps, inaugurated on 15 March last year, was formed to strengthen the country’s air surveillance capabilities and ensure continuous monitoring of Maldivian waters. The launch of the air station marks the beginning of 24-hour aerial operations and the official deployment of new drones.

The establishment and operation of the air station were authorised by a presidential decree issued by President Mohamed Muizzu on Monday.

The decree directs the MNDF to commence the station’s operations to safeguard national independence, protect the country’s airspace, and carry out its military duties in a sustainable and responsible manner.

According to the resolution, the air station will conduct air operations within Maldivian territory, oversee the country’s airspace and Special Economic Zone, and maintain 24-hour air defence and monitoring services.
