The government has announced a new flat-allocation scheme for the Greater Malé Area and Rasmale, with priority given to taxi drivers, judicial employees and tourism workers who have families living in Malé.
The scheme is part of the government’s newly launched ‘Family Housing’ programme under its ‘Housing for All’ policy.
The Housing Ministry gazetted the Flat Allocation Rules on Sunday. According to the ministry, the rules aim to:
-
Establish a framework for providing housing through government housing programmes
-
Ensure housing is allocated fairly to those most in need
-
Facilitate home ownership through flexible approaches
-
Provide suitable housing based on the needs of people across different income levels
Housing will be provided under two models: the affordable home-ownership model and the rent-to-own model.
Applicants must:
-
Be Maldivian citizens
-
Be at least 18 years old
-
Be residents of Malé, or if from another island, have lived in Malé continuously for 15 years
If married, applications must be submitted jointly, and both partners must meet the eligibility criteria.
The rules identify specific groups that will receive priority under the Housing for All scheme. These include:
-
Single parents caring for children under 18
-
Newlywed or young families
-
Family-based taxi drivers registered in Malé
-
Tourism-sector workers who have their families in Malé
-
Individuals deprived of land ownership due to pregnancy
-
Individuals holding certificates from the former Environmental and Shelter Project but who have not yet received flats
-
Families identified by the government as living in Malé without permanent housing, following assessments by authorised state institutions
-
Agencies and public-sector employees identified by the Housing Ministry
The government has previously stated that 7,000 housing units will be constructed in the Malé area, a commitment reiterated by President Mohamed Muizzu in his Republic Day address.
