Former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairman Fayyaz Ismail said on Friday that the party requires an opposition mayor who will challenge the government consistently.
Fayyaz made the remarks as the MDP prepares to select its candidate for the Malé mayoral election. Incumbent Malé Mayor Adam Azim and former parliamentarian Ali Azim are contesting the party primary.
In a post on X, Fayyaz expressed his support for Ali Azim. He said the next mayor of Malé must be prepared to counter the policies and decisions of President Mohamed Muizzu’s government.
He said the role of mayor carries responsibility beyond municipal matters and requires someone who will confront the government’s actions on a daily basis.
Fayyaz, who stepped down as MDP chairman recently, said Ali Azim would not retreat from such responsibilities.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has also endorsed Ali Azim in the primary. Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the party’s advisor, has not publicly endorsed a candidate, though some party members believe he favours Adam Azim.
