The government has decided to increase the monthly allowance paid to single mothers and single fathers to a maximum of MVR 15,000.

The revised allowance was introduced through amendments to the rules of the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), which were gazetted this week.

Under the amended rules, the allowance will be paid as follows:

  • MVR 3,000 per month for each of up to four children

  • MVR 1,000 per month for each additional child

  • A maximum monthly allowance of MVR 15,000

Previously, beneficiaries received MVR 2,000 per month for one child and MVR 1,000 for each additional child, with a maximum cap of MVR 10,000.

The revised rates form part of President Mohamed Muizzu’s campaign pledge to increase support for single-parent households by raising the per-child allowance and the overall monthly limit.
