Applications invited for EC seat as member’s term nears end
Applications were opened as the five-year term of commission member Mohamed Zahir is due to expire next month.
The President’s Office on Wednesday opened applications for membership of the Elections Commission.
Applications were opened as the five-year term of commission member Mohamed Zahir is due to expire next month. Zahir was appointed to the commission in February 2021 by the previous administration.
The President’s Office said applications will be accepted until 12 noon on Wednesday, the 21st of this month. Submissions may be made between 8:30am and 12 noon on working days.
Application forms are available from the reception of the President’s Office and can also be downloaded from the Elections Commission website.
To be eligible for appointment, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Be a Maldivian citizen aged 25 or above

Not have been convicted of an Islamic offence within the past five years

Not hold or have held an elected or appointed political post

Not be employed in government or any other organisation

Not be a member of a political party

Not be serving a sentence of more than 12 months for a criminal offence, or if previously sentenced to more than 12 months, at least five years must have passed since the sentence was completed or pardoned
The appointment process provides for the President to submit names of eligible candidates to the People’s Majlis for approval.
In addition to Mohamed Zahir, current members of the Elections Commission include commission president Mohamed Zahid, vice-president Abdul Rahman Salah Rasheed, Hassan Zakariyya, and Abdul Haseeb Ismail.
