The Elections Commission (EC) on Wednesday released details of ballot boxes to be used in the upcoming local council elections.

According to the commission, a total of 621 ballot boxes will be placed across polling stations in the Maldives and overseas. Overseas voting arrangements will include ballot boxes in the Maldives and Malaysia.

Information on the ballot boxes, including their codes, locations and assigned polling stations, has been published on the Elections Commission’s website.

The distribution of ballot boxes is as follows:

  • 321 ballot boxes in atolls

  • 240 ballot boxes in Malé, Hulhumalé and Villingili

  • 50 ballot boxes at resorts

  • Three ballot boxes at industrial workplaces

  • Five ballot boxes in prisons

  • Two ballot boxes overseas, in the Maldives and Malaysia

The commission said around 295,000 people are eligible to vote in the election scheduled for 4 April. The voters’ register has been published, with complaints accepted until the 18th of this month.

The nomination process for candidates will open on the 17th of this month. The election will select members of local councils and Women’s Development Committees across 225 constituencies.
