The Elections Commission (EC) has published the voters’ register for the upcoming local council elections and opened a period for complaints, with around 295,000 people listed as eligible to vote.

The commission gazetted the notice on Wednesday and said complaints may be submitted until 3pm on Tuesday. The voters’ register is available on the commission’s website.

According to the EC, a total of 294,937 voters are eligible to participate in the election. This includes 144,527 women, accounting for 49 per cent of the electorate, and 150,410 men, or 51 per cent. The difference between male and female voters is about 5,800.

The EC said voter registration details can also be checked by SMS, in addition to the gazette notice and the online register.

The commission said that applications to remove a person from the register or to amend information must be accompanied by official documents supporting the request. Political parties may submit complaints regarding the register through the Simedha portal.

Nomination submissions for the council elections are scheduled to open on the 17th of this month.

The number of eligible voters is higher than in the second round of the presidential election held two years ago, when 282,804 people were registered. The current register includes an increase of about 12,000 voters.
