The owner of H. Veyovila, the building inaugurated as the main headquarters of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) on Thursday night, has been fined MVR 128,545 for carrying out construction without the required permits.
Mayor of Malé City Council, Adam Azim, told Atoll Times that the fine was imposed on the 25th of last month after it was found that construction work had been carried out without approval.
“The owner of the house was fined more than MVR 128,000 for building without permission,” the mayor said.
According to the council, the penalty was imposed under Article 132 of the Construction Administration Rules. The unauthorised construction involved a five-storey structure, with a calculated fine of MVR 73,545 based on a rate of MVR 100 per square foot.
In addition, the owner was fined MVR 5,000 under Section 134 of the rules and a further MVR 50,000 under Section 137.
The Malé City Council has ordered that the total fine be paid within seven days.
The building, located in the Artificial Beach area, was previously used by the Maldivian Democratic Party and later by The Democrats. It has since been renovated and converted into a five-storey office and meeting hall for the PNC.
