The implementation agreement for the China–Maldives Friendship Hospital was signed on Monday, paving the way for the selection of a contractor for the project through a tender process.

The agreement was signed by the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure on behalf of Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib and by Embassy Counsellor Zhenge Zhu on behalf of the Government of China.

The hospital project is a pledge made by President Mohamed Muizzu.

According to the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure, a 112-bed tertiary-level hospital will be built on a plot of 12,890 square feet in Villimale with assistance from the Chinese government.

The ministry said the project is expected to commence in the third quarter of this year. Minister Muththalib has previously stated that the hospital is scheduled to be completed within two years.

The hospital will include a centre for elderly patients and those requiring long-term care. It will provide outpatient services, emergency treatment services, and specialised diagnostic and treatment facilities.

The ministry said the hospital will also offer treatment for major ulcers, treatment for decubitus ulcers, and other specialised medical services.
