The High Court has accepted a petition seeking to have the group known as “Scoop” declared an organised criminal group under the law.
The case was filed by the Prosecutor General’s Office on 15 January and has since been accepted by the High Court. Court officials said the case has been entered into the court system, although formal registration for the current month has not yet been completed.
In its filing, the Prosecutor General’s Office asked the court to declare the Scoop group a criminal gang and to identify nine individuals as members of the group.
The petition also seeks an order directing the Sports Commissioner to dissolve SKP Sports Club, which prosecutors allege is linked to the group.
In addition, the prosecution requested an order requiring the removal of the names “Scoop”, “Scoop Kanmathi” and “SKP” from walls and other locations.
This is the first case filed under the Prevention of Gang Crimes and Other Dangerous Crimes Act, which came into force in August, seeking a court declaration that a group constitutes a criminal gang.
