Hearing set in case to declare Addu group an organised criminal gang
This is the first case brought before the courts under the Prevention of Gang Crimes and Other Dangerous Crimes Act, which came into force in August.
The High Court will begin hearings on Sunday on a petition seeking to declare the group known as “Scoop”, based in Addu Hithadhoo, as an organised criminal group.
The court accepted the case filed by the Prosecutor General's Office on 15 January and registered it. The High Court has informed the prosecutor’s office that the first hearing will be held on Sunday at 12:50 pm.
The case comes more than a month after it was submitted to the court.
In its filing, the Prosecutor General’s Office has asked the High Court to declare the Scoop group a gang and to identify nine individuals as members of the group. The office has also requested an order directing the Sports Commissioner to dissolve SKP Sports Club, which is alleged to be linked to the group.
In addition, the prosecution has sought an order requiring the Addu City Council to remove the names “Scoop”, “Scoop Kanmathi” and “SKP” from walls and public places.
