Ensuring the protection of children and safeguarding their rights is a core responsibility of the state, Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen said on Wednesday.

The remarks were made in a post on the Commissioner’s official X account following the arrest of suspects accused of using a child to commit criminal offences. Naveen said police will seek the maximum penalties permitted under the law against those involved in such cases.

He said protecting children requires the involvement of the wider community and called for cooperation to ensure their safety.

Two men were arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of transporting drugs using a minor. The arrests were made during a joint operation by the Family and Child Protection Department, the Drug Enforcement Department, and the Counter Narcotics Intelligence unit of the Maldives Police Service.

The suspects were identified as Hassan Naaz, 28, of Nazlimanzil, and Ahmed Naeem, 39, of Satellite.

Both men were remanded in custody for 15 days pending a court decision on their detention.

Police said a 16-year-old boy was used in the alleged offence.
