The National Fertility Centre has reported that 23 women who underwent in vitro fertilisation (IVF) at the centre have become pregnant.

The statistics were released at a ceremony held on Tuesday to mark the birth of another child conceived through the programme.

According to the centre, 578 couples sought consultations over the past year. Of these, 96 women were selected for IVF treatment. Egg retrieval was completed for 86 women, and embryos were transferred to the uterus of 68 women. Twenty-three pregnancies have been confirmed from these procedures.

The first child conceived through IVF at the National Fertility Centre, located at Dharumavantha Hospital, was born last month. Since then, another child has been born, who is now 23 days old.

In addition to the National Fertility Centre, Tree Top Hospital has been providing IVF services for the past three years. As of last year, 23 children have been born there through IVF.

The National Fertility Centre, which opened a year ago, held the ceremony to mark its work. President Mohamed Muizzu and the First Lady Sajidha Mohamed attended the event.

It was also announced at the ceremony that IVF services are now available at all regional hospitals in Maldives, with plans to expand the service further in the future.
