In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment for people with infertility problems will be available at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) within the next year, the President's Office said on Thursday.

IVF services are currently available only at Tree Top Hospital, a private hospital. Tree Top charges MVR 46,000 for the service. IVF treatment is one of President Muizzu's 100 day promises.

Undersecretary for Public Policy Mohamed Firzul Abdullah Haleel said at a press conference at the Presidential Office on Thursday:

  • Aasandha will start covering IVF services in the next few weeks

  • From on Thursday, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and other fertility problems such as endometriosis will be treated through Aasandha

IVF services are currently available in private hospitals in Maldives, but they are working to make the service available at the government hospital IGMH within the next year, he said.

"Necessary decisions have been taken to establish this capability at IGMH. The aim is to develop things to the extent that IVF services can be started at IGMH within the next one year," Firzul said.

Since the introduction of IVF treatment at Tree Top Hospital last May, the hospital has had a queue of around 150 people and only 16 people have been given IVF treatment so far. Of these, six have been successfully treated and have become pregnant.
