Land reclamation at Giraavarufalhu proceeds with 2 dredgers
Mohamed Muizzu said on Friday that land reclamation at the Giraavarufalhu lagoon is progressing with two dredgers operating at the same time.
The government is undertaking land reclamation projects in the Malé area to address housing demand. These include projects initiated under the previous administration as well as new projects introduced by the current government. Some projects have faced interruptions, leading to delays in implementation.
According to the President, dredging work at Giraavarufalhu resumed last month after a pause. No further details were provided on the current schedule or completion timeline.
The project aims to reclaim a total of 169 hectares of land. Prior to the interruption, 56 hectares had been dredged.
Last year, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) said it planned to deploy three additional dredgers to accelerate work at Giraavarufalhu alongside the two already in operation. The additional dredgers were expected to be delivered by October last year.
