President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Saturday that his government's primary policy in the field of human rights is not to discriminate between citizens in the delivery of basic services.

In a speech released on the occasion of International Human Rights Day, which is observed this Saturday, the President spoke about the human rights of the country and related issues. In particular, there was a lot of talk about the day’s theme, "Dignity, freedom and justice for all".

The president said that the government's priority is not to discriminate between locals in providing basic services:

  • Significant efforts are already underway to ensure that essential services linked to basic human rights are provided equally to every citizen of the country

  • Under this, efforts are being made to ensure that the basic amenities are being set up in rural areas

  • This is being done in accordance with the constitutional obligation of the state to ensure that human rights are ensured for the people

According to the president, the basis of human rights is not just about rights. There are responsibilities to be taken with every fundamental right, he said:

  • The responsibility in not harming the lives of others while seeking the right to life

  • When it comes to the right to earn money and income, it is a responsibility not to encroach upon others' property unfairly

  • When you want to preserve your dignity, it is the responsibility not to infringe upon the dignity of others, whether it is in act or verbally

  • While advocating the right to freedom of expression, it is the responsibility not to take up one's freedom to the extent that it undermines one's dignity.

He said that while working for human rights, the focus today is on removing unhealthy habits that interfere with human rights. He said special attention should be given to prevent physical and sexual violence against children and women, domestic violence and other social crimes as well.
