The newly tarred section near the local market area on Boduthakurufaanu Magu was opened to public traffic on Sunday, with vehicles permitted to travel in both directions.

The widening and development of Boduthakurufaanu Magu began in August last year. The contract was awarded to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), with a completion period of 455 days. The total cost of the project is MVR 144 million.

The project is being implemented in five segments. The first segment was completed and opened to the public in December. Work then commenced on the 250-metre stretch between the local market and the North Harbour. As part of the overall project, 830 metres of road surface is being laid from the Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal to the local market. This section was completed and opened to traffic on Sunday.

Construction Minister Abdulla Muththalib said the road was designated as a two-way route due to traffic-related difficulties in the area. He said the change is intended to address congestion.

Maldives Police Service advised road users to follow traffic regulations as the road has been converted to a two-way street from Chaandhanee Magu to Faalandhoh Higun. Police instructions include refraining from double parking during loading and unloading, not placing goods or pallets on the road, observing speed limits, and avoiding illegal parking.

As part of the project, a six-metre section was added to the road by dredging the lagoon. A tree planting activity was also carried out on Sunday prior to the opening of the road section.
