The second phase of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu widening project has been completed, with authorities aiming to reopen the road by next Tuesday.
The widening of the road began in August last year and was carried out in five segments. The first segment, from the official jetty to the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), was completed in early December. Work on the second segment, extending to North Harbour, commenced in December.
The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) confirmed that tarring work on the stretch to North Harbour was completed Tuesday.
An MTCC official stated that final preparations are under way to facilitate the reopening of the road. These include the installation of lighting and road markings.
“We are working 24 hours a day to complete the remaining work. Our hope is to complete all the road works by the 15th of this month and open it to the public before Ramadan,” the official said.
According to the calendar, the month of Ramadan is scheduled to begin on Wednesday next week.
Under the second segment of the project, 260 metres of road have been paved. The carriageway has been widened to 14 metres. The port road canal has been extended by approximately six metres.
