President Mohamed Muizzu on Monday announced the waiver of penalty charges on outstanding rent for residents of Sinamalé and Malé Hiyaa flats and approved an allowance of MVR 100,000 for each apartment.

The decision relates to Sinamalé Flats 1, 2, 3 and 4, and Malé Hiyaa Flats 1 and 2, which are planned to be demolished to make way for a new housing project. Redevelopment of the sites was included in President Muizzu’s earlier housing proposals when he served as Mayor of Malé, under which existing owners were to be provided alternative housing.

The announcement was made during a meeting with residents held on Monday evening at Muleeaage, the official residence of the President. Residents outlined their living conditions, unpaid rent, penalty charges and related difficulties.

Following the discussions, the President decreed that all penalties on outstanding rent be waived. Each household will receive an allowance of MVR 100,000. Where outstanding rent exceeds MVR 100,000, the amount payable will be capped at that figure. Where the outstanding amount is less than MVR 100,000, the full balance will be waived and the remaining amount credited to the resident’s account.

Residents who have already settled all payments for their flats will receive the full MVR 100,000 allowance directly.
