The Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development has opened applications for residential land under the ‘Goathi-Gedhoru’ housing programme, allowing individuals to apply even if a house is registered in the name of their spouse.

The ministry said in an announcement on Sunday that applications are now open and will remain available until next month. Applications must be submitted through the government housing portal.

According to the ministry, the decision was taken to allow wider access to housing opportunities for residents.

Under the programme, residential land will be allocated from Ras Malé.

Key provisions of the programme include:

  • Each plot will measure 1,250 square feet

  • A total of 1,000 plots will be allocated under the programme

  • Allocation will be made under two categories

The first category is for residents of Malé. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and must have been registered as residents of Malé for at least one year.

The second category is for residents of other islands who have lived in Malé for 15 years. Applicants under this category must also be 18 years of age or older.

Applicants in both categories must not own land or a share of land exceeding 400 square feet anywhere in the Maldives.

Additional requirements include:

  • Agreement to relinquish any land entitlement received through inheritance or will from property registered under parents, children or a spouse

  • If a share of land is registered in the applicant’s name, the applicant must agree to transfer that share to the other co-owners

  • The applicant must not have received a flat under a government housing programme

  • The applicant must not have sold, transferred or relinquished land or flats received under a government housing programme

The ministry said applications for land and flats are currently open under the government’s housing policy.

Under the programme, 15,000 land plots will be allocated in the Greater Malé area and Ras Malé. In addition, 7,900 flats will be allocated in the Greater Malé region.
