Fine waiver, MVR 100k allowance for Sinamalé, Malé Hiyaa flats
The Housing Ministry has decided to carry out an assessment to repair Sinamalé and Malé Hiyaa flats, the first apartment buildings constructed in Malé.
The decision follows a meeting held on Monday at Muleeaage between Mohamed Muizzu and residents of the Sinamalé and Malé Hiyaa flats, during which residents raised concerns about building maintenance and living conditions.
Housing Minister Abdulla Muththalib said on X that although the buildings fall under the administration of the Malé City Council, the ministry had decided to conduct an assessment due to concerns related to public safety and daily living conditions.
The President also announced on Monday that penalty charges on outstanding rent for residents of Sinamalé and Malé Hiyaa flats would be waived and that an allowance of MVR 100,000 would be provided for each apartment.
The decision applies to Sinamalé Flats 1, 2, 3 and 4, and Malé Hiyaa Flats 1 and 2. These buildings are planned to be demolished to make way for a new housing project. Redevelopment of the sites was included in housing proposals announced earlier by President Muizzu when he served as Mayor of Malé, under which current owners were to be provided alternative housing.
During the meeting, residents outlined issues including unpaid rent, penalty charges and structural deterioration. Following the discussions, the President decreed that all penalties on outstanding rent be waived.
Each household will receive an allowance of MVR 100,000. Where outstanding rent exceeds this amount, the payable sum will be capped at MVR 100,000. If the outstanding amount is less than MVR 100,000, it will be fully waived and the remaining balance credited to the resident’s account. Residents who have already settled their full payments will receive the allowance directly.
