Parliament on Tuesday approved the appointment of Riffath Abdulla to the Elections Commission, to fill the seat becoming vacant with the end of Mohamed Zahir’s term.

Zahir’s five-year term is due to expire on the 21st of this month.

Five candidates, including Zahir, were considered for the position. Mohamed Muizzu selected Riffath and submitted the nomination to Parliament last week for approval.

The Parliament’s Independent Institutions Committee met on Monday and endorsed the nomination as submitted by the President. The committee’s report was tabled for a vote during Tuesday’s sitting.

When put to the vote, Riffath received 58 votes in favour.

Riffath previously served at the Elections Commission between 2017 and 2019, working in its legal department. He later held the post of Deputy Director at the commission.
