Household waste has been dumped in the ground-floor areas of Hiyaa flat towers in Hulhumalé Phase 2, with parts of the buildings used as disposal points for large items.

Photographs shared on social media show ground-level spaces at the Hiyaa towers filled with furniture, chairs, boxes and other belongings removed from apartments.

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) said its staff are removing the waste. However, the corporation said garbage continues to be dumped after clean-up efforts. HDC said individuals responsible have been identified and advised not to repeat the action.

During Ramadan, the disposal of household waste and large items on streets has increased. Similar dumping was reported at Aman towers developed by the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) in Hulhumalé Phase 2. After cleaning the area, FDC began issuing fines to those responsible.

Dumping household waste in public areas is prohibited. Property owners are required to arrange proper disposal of large items such as furniture and boxes. The Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) provides a Call and Pickup Service for the collection of such waste.
